Can “Soft Socializing” Save IRL Dating?
How Low-Pressure Activities Are Making IRL Dating Less Intimidating
There’s a new type of event in town, and it might just have a better track record for creating connections. Meet soft socializing, the low-pressure way to meet new people.
Soft socializing events are designed to create a low-stakes environment for people to connect and choose their own journey. They typically focus on a low-effort activity, while having a space for people to both socialize and observe as they please.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, this concept isn’t new. However, in a tech-driven modern society, bringing back these types of social spaces feels refreshing. With IRL dating continuing to trend, soft socializing may be a solution to the fear of in-person meetings.
People want to socialize, but they don’t want to feel pressured, with 58% saying they want to prioritize meeting new people, but don’t want it to be the focus, according to Eventbrite’s 2027 Social Study. In the same study, 41% say they want places to sit back and observe, and 45% prefer to pick how and when they socialize.
So how do we create an event that does all three?
*Que soft-socializing events.
These events are not just for singles. They are for all who are trying to build a village, meet new people, make new friends, and connect with different communities around them. Soft socializing is a safe place to try socializing again.
We all have a social muscle that needs to be exercised, but it can be daunting to go into a room full of strangers and expect to start chatting. We need structure, yet room for freedom to choose how and when to engage.
That’s what makes soft socializing so good for IRL dating. Like any type of socializing, IRL dating also requires us to exercise our social muscles. What makes it more difficult is the added pressure of needing to be a certain way or meet a specific type of person when we are single. There are high societal expectations that are almost impossible to meet.
While more “pressurized” dating events remain a great tool to get into spaces with highly intentional singles, soft socializing events allow singles to dip their toes back into IRL dating.
They create an environment for singles to practice meeting in-person again. The focus is not on everyone being single, but rather on the activity you are doing. This makes for great conversation starters, and ideally, you have something to do with your hands.
At the events, singles can build their confidence in a safe environment, pick and choose when they want to engage or focus on the activity, and meet like-minded people. These events can be fitness classes, social nature walks, arts and crafts, volunteer work, gardening, and more.
Before you jump into a soft socializing event, I recommend reflecting on the type of activities you enjoy or have an interest in trying. This will help narrow the search and help you connect with people with similar interests. Aka the common denominator!
For finding events near you, check with your local influencers or Instagram accounts in your neighborhood. Your local spots may already be hosting these types of events in collaboration with them! Next, search on Luma, Eventbrite, or MeetUp. Start with the keyword “single” + the activity you’re interested in.
If you’re looking for soft socializing events in NYC, join our Luma page or newsletter for our upcoming singles events. We focus on bringing your low-pressure space to meet people who also happen to be single in NYC.
So, can soft-socializing help solve the IRL dating challenge?
I have hope… but it’s up to every individual to be part of the solution.
